Lawyer predicts more arrests in Tony Mitchell’s tragic death at Walker County jail: Just the beginning

Tony Mitchell’s family was shocked when former Walker County Jail corrections officer Joshua Conner Jones admitted his involvement in Mitchell’s death as revealed in a plea agreement to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Mitchell died in January 2023 after being arrested on charges of shooting at deputies, and later covered in black spray paint claiming to have a “portal to hell”. The county coroner listed his death as homicide due to hypothermia and sepsis from infected injuries and medical neglect. Jones admitted that he and other jail staff contributed to Mitchell’s death, stating, “collectively we did it. We killed him.” The plea agreement mentions five co-conspirators who have not been charged yet. Surveillance footage leaked after Mitchell’s death showed mistreatment and abuse towards him. Jones confessed that Mitchell was denied medical care by falsely claiming he was combative. Mitchell suffered inhumane conditions in jail, leading to his deterioration and eventual death. Attorney Jon C. Goldfarb, representing Mitchell’s family, emphasized the importance of holding all responsible parties accountable and ensuring justice for Mitchell’s life. The civil case is on hold pending the outcome of the criminal case, with Goldfarb expecting additional charges in the future. Goldfarb highlighted the heartlessness and cruelty displayed by the jail staff towards Mitchell, underscoring the need for them to understand the value of Mitchell’s life and for justice to be served.
