Central-Phenix City High Welcomes New Basketball Coach Steve Rogers
Central-Phenix City High School is set for a new chapter as Steve Rogers has been appointed as the head basketball coach, following a unanimous decision by the Phenix City Board of Education. He joins the Red Devils after a successful tenure at Booker T. Washington High in Tuskegee, where he led his team to an impressive 28-5 record last season.
Rogers’ coaching journey includes prior stops at Prattville High School (2020-2022) and Booker T. Washington, marking this as his third high school coaching position. He recalls a memorable matchup against Central, stating, “They beat us pretty good, but it ultimately prepared us for the playoffs.” He expressed gratitude for the competitive environment facilitated by former Central coach Charles Burkett, noting, “We recognized the need for that level of competition, and we made the game happen.”
Now at Central, Rogers is blessed with the opportunity to build upon Coach Burkett’s established foundation, although he acknowledges a significant roster transition. The Red Devils will need to regroup after losing 11 of the 13 players who were instrumental in reaching the Final Four for three consecutive years, including a trip to the Class 7A championship game in 2023.
“I understand that we’re essentially starting anew, but that’s a challenge I embrace,” Rogers shared in an interview. Equipped with a passion for program development and an eye for talent, the new coach is eager to begin his work with the team. “Central has always been a program that has interested me, and I’ve long recognized the caliber of talent here,” he added. As the new season approaches, the Central-Phenix City community looks forward to the fresh energy Rogers is set to bring to the Red Devils basketball program.
