Tackling Liver Health: The Impact of a Sedentary Lifestyle

As modern society embraces a more sedentary lifestyle marked by long hours of sitting and increased screen time, health concerns are escalating. While the negative effects on cardiovascular health and diabetes are widely recognized, a growing body of evidence points to a significant link between inactivity and Metabolic dysfunction associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), a condition characterized by fat accumulation in the liver of non-alcohol consumers.

Dr. Srujan Kumar Dasyam, Consultant Medical Gastroenterologist at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, emphasizes the urgent need for lifestyle changes. MASLD manifests as a spectrum from simple fatty liver to more severe conditions such as Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), inflammation, and even liver cancer. Key factors contributing to MASLD include increased energy balance from reduced physical activity and a rise in insulin resistance, both exacerbated by a sedentary lifestyle.

Moreover, chronic low-grade inflammation associated with obesity could further complicate liver health. Dr. Dasyam urges individuals, especially those at risk of MASLD, to adopt more active lifestyles. Suggested strategies include:

  • Engaging in Regular Physical Activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly, such as brisk walking or cycling.
  • Reducing Sedentary Time: Incorporate short walks or standing breaks every 30 minutes.
  • Following a Healthy Diet: Emphasize whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins while minimizing processed foods and sugars.
  • Pursuing Gradual Weight Loss: Aiming for a 5-10% reduction in body weight can significantly enhance liver health.
  • Managing Underlying Health Conditions: Keeping chronic issues like diabetes and hypertension in check is crucial.

In conclusion, understanding the risks of a sedentary lifestyle on liver health is vital. By embracing these lifestyle modifications, individuals can improve their liver health and mitigate the risks associated with MASLD. Regular consultations with healthcare professionals are strongly recommended for personalized strategies and monitoring.
