Social Security Benefits Set for Release Later This Month: 2025 Payment Schedule

Social Security Payments Delayed for May Recipients

In a notable scheduling change, millions of Social Security recipients will receive their benefits later than usual in May 2025. Approximately 7.4 million individuals will experience this shift due to a unique quirk in the calendar, marking a rare delay.

Typically, Social Security benefits are distributed on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of the month, based on beneficiaries’ birth dates. Those born between the 1st and 10th receive their payments on the second Wednesday, while those born between the 11th and 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, and recipients born from the 21st to the 31st get their payments on the fourth Wednesday.

This May, the first of the month lands on a Thursday, and the first Wednesday falls on the 7th, resulting in the second Wednesday being pushed back to May 14. Consequently, beneficiaries can expect their payments on the 14th, with subsequent distributions on the 21st and 28th.

Additionally, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, who often rely on benefits for low-income elderly individuals or disabled persons, will encounter a different but impactful change. SSI payments were dispensed as usual on the first of May, but recipients will see two payments this month—one for May and another on May 30 to cover June, as June 1 falls on a Sunday. Therefore, SSI recipients will receive no payments in June.

It’s important to note that individuals who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, or those who collect both Social Security and SSI, follow a distinct distribution schedule. Their SSI payments are issued on the 1st, while Social Security is paid on the third Wednesday, irrespective of their birth dates.

Beneficiaries are advised to plan accordingly for these changes in the payment schedule.
