Historic Election in Alabama: First Black Mayor Wins in Newbern
In a landmark election, Patrick Braxton has been elected as the first Black mayor of Newbern, Alabama, receiving 66 votes to his opponent’s 26. This significant victory comes four years after Braxton was unjustly locked out of the town hall and denied the opportunity to serve, despite running unopposed for the position in 2020.
Newbern, with a population of just 133, had not held a mayoral election in over 60 years, functioning under a “hand-me-down governance” system. This structure allowed mayors to appoint their successors and council members, resulting in a predominantly white government in a town with a Black population nearly twice as large. Braxton’s election marks a pivotal shift toward democratic governance in Newbern.
Following a legal battle initiated by Braxton and other Black residents, a federal settlement mandated the election. Braxton had previously been barred from accessing town resources despite being elected without a vote. Town officials had contested the legitimacy of his position, claiming procedural invalidity, but the election results clearly reflect the community’s support for Braxton’s leadership.
Braxton expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, saying, “The people came out and spoke and voted. Now, there ain’t no doubt what they want for this town.” His success symbolizes a commitment to fair representation and democratic principles within local governance.
Madison Hollon of the SPLC Action Fund, which endorsed Braxton, remarked on the election as a turning point, emphasizing the importance of ensuring every resident has a voice. With the recent election, the town of Newbern is poised to embrace a new chapter under Braxton’s leadership, restoring democratic processes and fostering inclusivity.
