Newark Airport Struggles Continue: Ground Delays and Over 80 Flights Canceled

Travel disruptions continued at Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday due to a ground delay, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reporting average departure delays of 19 minutes until 9 p.m. ET. By 9:30 a.m. ET, there were more than 45 delays and over 80 cancellations, exacerbating ongoing issues at the airport, which had already faced a ground stop the previous day.

Recent radar outages on Friday and Sunday, linked to the Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) network in Philadelphia, led to significant flight disruptions. The FAA noted that radar screens had gone black briefly on Friday, impacting a limited number of sectors, while Sunday saw a ground stop for approximately 45 minutes due to equipment failures. These outages were attributed to telecommunications issues, prompting the FAA to manage air traffic cautiously to ensure stability.

Passengers expressed anxiety about flying into Newark, reflecting growing frustration with the persistent travel woes. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy voiced concerns about the outdated air traffic monitoring system and cited the recent glitches as detractors of a reliable travel experience. Despite acknowledging the ongoing challenges, he assured the public that flying in and out of Newark remains safe.

Duffy announced that Newark will experience reduced capacity in the coming weeks as he prepares to convene meetings with airlines servicing the airport to address the operational challenges. Overall, the travel situation at Newark continues to be strained, and efforts are underway to improve the reliability of air travel at the airport.
