U.S. Department of Education Discontinues National Blue Ribbon Schools Program

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The U.S. Department of Education has officially announced the termination of the National Blue Ribbon Schools program, ending a distinguished tradition of over 40 years that recognized schools for outstanding academic performance and efforts in closing achievement gaps. The decision was communicated to state school chiefs in a letter from department communications official Madi Biedermann.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools program has played a key role in celebrating excellence in education, enabling schools to gain national recognition, and often leading to community-wide celebrations. Jackie Zeigler, an Alabama Board of Education member and former principal at Mary B. Austin Elementary—an award recipient in 2006—expressed her disappointment at the news. "I’m sad. I had no idea that was coming down the pike," she said, underscoring the importance of a national accolade, especially given Alabama’s previous lack of recognition on that scale.

State Superintendent Eric Mackey also lamented the program’s closure, noting that while Alabama has its own recognition initiatives, the National Blue Ribbon Schools award carried unique significance. Over its four decades, the program recognized more than 9,000 schools nationwide, with Alabama contributing 134 public and private institutions, including five last year.

The Department cited a shift towards empowering state leadership and promoting localized recognition of educational accomplishments as the reason for program termination. While several states maintain their own awards, the ending of this nationwide program marks a significant change in how educational excellence is acknowledged.

As of Friday afternoon, there was no announcement on the program’s closure on its official social media accounts, which last highlighted a Connecticut school on August 14.
