Alabama Executes Gregory Hunt via Nitrogen Method

ATMORE, AL – In a historic execution, Alabama executed convicted murderer Gregory Hunt on Tuesday using the nitrogen-gas method, marking the state’s fifth nitrogen execution and the second this year. The execution occurred at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility. Hunt, who spent 35 years on Death Row, was convicted for the brutal killing of 32-year-old Karen Sanders Lane in 1988. Her injuries included multiple head trauma, fractured ribs, and severe internal damage.

Hunt’s recent appeals argued that the charge should not have been capital murder but an abuse-of-corpse charge, a claim that was ultimately rejected.

In other news, the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation announced that an 8,000-acre nature preserve in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta will be named the "E.O. Wilson Land Between the Rivers Preserve." This naming coincided with what would have been the birthday of renowned biologist E.O. Wilson, who was born in Birmingham. The preserve is regarded as one of the most biodiverse regions globally and was acquired last year through collaboration between the Nature Conservancy, Patagonia, and a private donor.

On the sports front, fan voting for the upcoming Major League Baseball All-Star Game is underway, with three Alabama players making the ballot: Jordan Beck, Brendan Donovan, and Gunnar Henderson. Fans have the opportunity to vote multiple times through June 6, as they support local talent for the All-Star lineup.

In a separate development, attorney Elizabeth Couey Smithart accused certain breakaway churches within the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church of manipulating corporate documents to retain property, prompting legal action.

Additionally, Alabama ranks 43rd in child well-being according to the latest Kids Count Data Book, which assessed factors such as poverty, infant mortality, and education.
