Senator Tommy Tuberville Targeted by Swatting Incidents over Christmas 2023

On Christmas Day 2023, a disturbing swatting incident unfolded at Senator Tommy Tuberville’s beach home in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Shortly after 5 p.m., authorities responded to reports of a woman shot in the head and a man tied up, with a ransom demand of $10,000. The male caller, who spoke with a Russian accent, made the distressing call from a blocked number, prompting a huge law enforcement response that included the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Capitol Police.

Authorities later determined that the call was part of a broader swatting scheme, attributed to 18-year-old Alan W. Filion, who has been connected to over 375 similar threats and has been sentenced to 48 months in prison. Tuberville’s spokesperson confirmed he was not present during the call but arrived about 90 minutes later. This was the second swatting incident involving Tuberville over that holiday.

Swatting—making fake emergency calls to elicit heavy police responses—poses significant dangers to both first responders and potential victims. Tuberville has co-sponsored legislation aimed at imposing strict penalties for such acts, including hefty prison terms for those whose hoaxes result in serious harm.

The incident raised questions about Tuberville’s residency status amid speculation about his potential run for governor in 2026. Although he owns several properties in Florida, including two in close proximity to the targeted home, Alabama law requires gubernatorial candidates to have resided in the state for at least seven years prior to their election.

While Tuberville’s voter registration in Alabama meets this requirement, the issue of his residency continues to be a topic of political discourse as he navigates his future in state politics after his current Senate term ends in January 2027.
