Detroit Police looking to understand why Jameson Williams avoided arrest

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is facing additional legal trouble as the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office reviews a request for a warrant on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle. This comes after an internal review by the Detroit Police Department regarding a recent traffic stop involving Williams.

During the traffic stop, Williams was handcuffed and placed in a police car, but was ultimately released after patrol officers received assistance and made phone calls. Williams, who plays for the Lions, mentioned his profession to the policemen during the stop, questioning whether it influenced the decision-making process.

Police found two guns in the car driven by Williams’ brother, one of which was under Williams’ seat and registered to him, despite him not having a concealed-pistol license. Williams claimed he had the gun for protection as he lived in Detroit. His attorney stated that both guns were properly registered and the driver had the necessary credentials, but Williams was still taken into custody.

The 2021 first-round draft pick has been suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances, missing the Lions’ recent victory over the Tennessee Titans and the upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers. Last year, Williams served a four-game suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy.

The Lions released a statement acknowledging the incident and mentioning that they are cooperating with law enforcement. Williams has hired an attorney for the case.
