In India, heart strokes affect a significant number of individuals every year, with a stroke occurring every 20 seconds. Unfortunately, without treatment, a high percentage of these individuals do not survive, or are left with severe deficits. Dr Sunil V Furtado from Ramaiah Institute of Neurosciences highlighted the lack of awareness of stroke symptoms, inadequate infrastructure in primary hospitals, and the non-referral of cases to comprehensive stroke treatment centers.
He emphasized the importance of awareness and prevention, stating that factors like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of stroke. However, active physical activity, cessation of smoking, and moderation in alcohol consumption can reduce the risk in 90% of cases.
On World Stroke Day, Medicover Hospital Whitefield launched a Stroke Awareness Programme to unite healthcare professionals, survivors, families, and the community in the fight against stroke. Consultant Neurologist Dr Poonam C Awatare stressed the importance of lifestyle adjustments and routine screenings, especially for high-risk individuals. She stated that prevention remains the most effective defense against strokes.
Dr Sunil V Furtado also mentioned that the World Stroke Campaign is using sports and physical activity to raise awareness about stroke and encourage action on prevention and rehabilitation. He urged the public to be aware of the signs of stroke and to seek immediate medical attention in case of an emergency.
