William Bryon overcomes late wrecks to claim back-to-back Daytona 500 victories

William Byron claimed his second consecutive Daytona 500 victory on Sunday night, navigating through a series of late-race wrecks to secure the win. In the No. 24 Chevrolet, Byron found himself in ninth place with one lap remaining before moving up to take the lead and ultimately the win. This makes him the first back-to-back winner since Denny Hamlin in 2019-20.

With the race marked by two lengthy weather delays, Byron managed to hold on for the victory, with President Donald Trump watching from Florida after leading the drivers around the track in his presidential limousine, known as “The Beast.” The victory also marked Hendrick Motorsports’ 10th Daytona 500 win, breaking a tie with Petty Enterprises for the record.

The race was not without its trademark late-race wrecks, with a number of top contenders such as Bubba Wallace, Kyle Larson, and Brad Keselowski having their chances at victory spoiled. A multi-car melee was caused by reigning NASCAR champion Joey Logano and Ricky Stenhouse, knocking several former Cup Series champions out of contention.

Ultimately, Tyler Reddick finished second, with Jimmie Johnson in third place. The race was marked by excitement and drama, with Byron emerging as the victor in a thrilling finish. Byron expressed his disbelief at the outcome, stating that he was “fortunate it worked out in our favor” after a chaotic race at Daytona International Speedway.
