What Alabama parents should know about a new approach to high school graduation

A new high school diploma pathway, the Workforce Pathways Diploma, is being introduced this fall, offering students a career-focused alternative to the traditional college-prep track. This option allows students to swap upper-level math and science courses for hands-on courses in fields like welding, health sciences, and automotive repair while still earning a high school diploma. It is important for parents and students to understand that this pathway is not easier, just different, and can be just as rigorous as the college-prep track.

Students can now choose from two diploma options in Alabama: Option A, the traditional four-by-four curriculum, and Option B, the Workforce Pathways Diploma. Before choosing Option B, families should consider whether their child plans to attend a four-year university, would benefit more from career training, and if they are ready to commit to a specific pathway.

While students who complete the Workforce Pathways Diploma will still graduate with a high school diploma, not all colleges accept it. However, the Alabama High School Athletic Association has confirmed that students choosing Option B will remain eligible to participate in high school sports. Lawmakers are also considering additional options for high school students, including the REACH Act and Move On When Ready Act.

It is crucial for families to have open discussions with their children about these options and the potential consequences of their choices in order to make informed decisions about their future. Registration is currently ongoing, and students and families should carefully consider their options before making final decisions this spring.
