Celebrate the 4th of July Safely in Central Alabama
As Independence Day approaches, festivities are gearing up across Central Alabama with a variety of events planned to celebrate this patriotic occasion. Fireworks, food, music, and family fun are all set to mark the special day.
Residents are reminded of specific state laws governing fireworks. While items such as bottle rockets and sparklers are permitted, ground salute fireworks containing more than two grains of explosives are banned. In Alabama, individuals under 16 require an adult to purchase fireworks, and sales are prohibited to anyone appearing intoxicated or irresponsible.
Pet safety is another key concern during the 4th of July celebrations. Veterinarian Stephanie Sylacauga advises keeping pets indoors to shield them from noise-induced fright, which can compel them to run away. For added safety, consider microchipping your pets, with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society offering free microchipping Saturday at Cahaba Brewing Company from noon to 2 PM.
Local authorities are also on high alert, with Alabama state troopers emphasizing the importance of sober driving. Tragically, over 1,400 drivers died in crashes during previous 4th of July celebrations from 2017 to 2021, underscoring the potential dangers of impaired driving.
Community events are plentiful, featuring festivals ideal for family outings. From the Sounds of Liberty celebration in Blount County to various firework displays in Jefferson County and the Star-Spangled activities in Dallas County, there’s no shortage of excitement. Noteworthy events include the Smith Lake Park Fireworks and Music Festival and the 4th of July Celebration on the River in Tuscaloosa.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the festivities responsibly, in the spirit of unity and celebration of freedom. Stay updated on local events and safety tips through local news channels.
