Walter Gonsoulin of Jefferson County Awarded National Superintendent of the Year


Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin has been named National Superintendent of the Year at the National Conference on Education in New Orleans, becoming the first Alabama superintendent to receive the honor in its 37-year history. Gonsoulin expressed gratitude for the award, attributing his success to the hard work of teachers, administrators, and other members of the school community.
As part of the honor, Gonsoulin was given a $10,000 scholarship to award to a high school senior in his hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana, or in Jefferson County schools. He was chosen from a group of finalists from Illinois, Arkansas, and Florida, with the award recognizing his leadership and commitment to student success.
Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey praised Gonsoulin’s achievement as a significant moment for the state, highlighting the positive impact on children in Alabama. Since becoming superintendent in 2019, Gonsoulin has focused on expanding opportunities for students, resulting in increased industry credentials and scholarship offers for graduating students.
Gonsoulin’s dedication to student success has garnered attention nationwide, with other districts looking to Jefferson County as a model for success in education. Jefferson County Board of Education President Ronnie Dixon emphasized the sense of unity and celebration within the district, with Gonsoulin leading the way in promoting a family-oriented approach to education.
