Vigil for Birmingham mass shooting victim brings tears, prayers, and pleas: a plea to end gun violence

Dozens gathered in the rain at Railroad Park in Birmingham to remember Anitra “ReRe” Holloman, a young mother killed in a shooting outside Hush lounge. Along with Holloman, three men were killed, and 17 others were injured in the mass shooting. Police believe it was a targeted murder-for-hire, with more than 100 shots fired.

The vigil for Holloman was emotional, with her mother, Candance Kemp, remembering her as a great daughter, mom, and best friend. Holloman was studying to be a teacher and was a single mother to a 1-year-old daughter, Ski’Lar. Tragically, her daughter’s father was also killed in a shooting in 2022.

The community came together to offer support to Kemp, highlighting the impact of gun violence on families. Sheree Kennon, who lost her son to gun violence and founded a nonprofit to support those who have lost a child, emphasized the need to address violence in the community.

Sherita Clark, who lost her cousin and his pregnant girlfriend in a double homicide, urged people to put down their guns and not seek revenge. She emphasized the importance of coming forward with information to help solve these crimes.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with Holloman’s burial, and anyone with information is urged to contact the police. The community is mourning the loss of Holloman and the other victims of senseless violence, calling for an end to the cycle of gun violence plaguing the city.
