Soldier Dies During Training at Fort Jackson
Columbia, SC – A soldier from Fort Jackson has died during training, marking a tragic incident at the U.S. Army’s largest military basic training installation. The soldier, a member of Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, was found unresponsive on Thursday, though details surrounding the cause of death remain undisclosed. Fort Jackson Commander Maj. Gen. Daryl Hood expressed condolences, stating, “Losing a teammate affects us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, as well as the cadre and fellow trainees.” In light of the incident, the unit will observe a 48-hour training stand down.
Fort Jackson is home to over 50,000 recruits annually, training future soldiers. However, the base has faced a troubling pattern of fatalities in recent years. Notably, Staff Sgt. Corey R. Brown, a drill sergeant, was found unresponsive at home, while Sgt. 1st Class Joshua A. Alfieri died in March during a housing unit incident. Earlier this year, Pfc. Veronica L. Wynn also tragically passed away during a structured training session.
In a concerning series of events, multiple deaths at Fort Jackson have been reported throughout 2023, including the passing of 2nd Lt. Pascal Buma during a physical training run. Additionally, two drill sergeants were found dead just days apart in December 2023, sparking further scrutiny.
As Fort Jackson provides support to the soldier’s family and the unit, the military community remains on alert, grieving these untimely losses. The Army has yet to provide further details about the ongoing investigations into these incidents.
