Update: VA Home Restoration Project Estimated to Take Over 12 Months and Cost Between $50M and $60M

Alabama Veterans Home to Undergo Yearlong Reconstruction After Devastating Fire

Enterprise, AL – The Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home, severely damaged by a fire in April, is set for an extensive rebuilding process estimated to take 12 to 14 months, according to state officials. The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) announced that the restoration could cost between $50 million and $60 million, following an original construction expense of $98.8 million for the facility, which had only been operational for six months before the fire.

ADVA Commissioner Jeff Newton addressed displaced residents this week, reaffirming the commitment to their safe and comfortable return. Currently, veterans are accommodated at Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation, while HMR of Alabama continues to manage care.

Newton acknowledged the challenges presented by the situation, emphasizing the department’s dedication to prioritizing veterans’ health and well-being throughout the complex reconstruction process. A recent assessment revealed that the fire destroyed critical areas of the facility, including the kitchen, laundry, and utility room, leaving most of the 182,000-square-foot building impacted by fire and water damage.

The incident was officially ruled accidental, sparked by contractors working on roof vents over the kitchen area. Restoration efforts will adhere to both state construction laws and federal VA guidelines. Funding for the project will be sourced from the Alabama Division of Risk Management alongside insurance reimbursements.

Mayor William Cooper highlighted the significance of the veterans to the community, expressing gratitude to the ADVA and local health staff for their compassionate care. He noted, “We eagerly await the day our heroes return to a home built in honor of their service.” The community looks forward to the reconstruction of a beloved facility that reflects the respect veterans have earned.
