Peter J. Mohler Appointed Next President of the University of Alabama
Tuscaloosa, AL – The University of Alabama Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Peter J. Mohler as the institution’s 30th president, effective July 21. Mohler, currently serving as executive vice president for research and innovation and chief scientific officer at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, will succeed Stuart Bell, who has held the presidency since 2015.
Opening his remarks with the university’s iconic "Roll Tide," Mohler expressed his excitement for the new role, emphasizing a shared commitment to academic and athletic excellence. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime," he stated, highlighting the university’s dedication to student success and community service.
Mohler’s appointment comes at a crucial time for higher education, marked by ongoing national debates regarding student loan programs and financial aid. With approximately 68% of UA students receiving financial assistance, Mohler stressed the importance of reaffirming the university’s public mission amid these challenges. The search for the new president began in January, led by UA Trustee Karen Brooks and a 12-member committee, with over 500 participants contributing to the process. Mohler’s distinguished background includes a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and a doctorate in cell and molecular physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His appointment has garnered broad support from the community and beyond, with notable figures, including U.S. Senators and UA Athletic Director Greg Byrne, welcoming him to the leadership role. Mohler, originally from Colorado and father to three children, now looks forward to guiding UA as it embraces its pivotal role in shaping the future of education in Alabama and beyond.
