Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Washington and Mobile Counties
Washington and Mobile Counties, AL – The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region, effective from 6:13 PM to 7 PM on Sunday. Residents in Citronelle and McIntosh are advised to remain vigilant as storms may produce wind gusts up to 40 mph and marble-sized hail (approximately 0.5 inches in diameter).
Doppler radar detected a robust thunderstorm near Citronelle, moving northeast at 25 mph. Such conditions could lead to potential hazards, including fallen tree limbs and damage to unsecured outdoor items. Authorities strongly recommend that individuals outdoors seek shelter inside a sturdy building.
Additionally, lightning safety is a critical concern as thunderstorms roll through. The National Weather Service reports that lightning strikes the U.S. about 25 million times annually, leading to an average of 20 fatalities each year. As thunderstorms approach, the risk of lightning potential dramatically increases, peaking when the storm is overhead.
To enhance safety during thunderstorms, experts suggest crafting a lightning safety plan and closely monitoring the sky for threatening signs. If thunder is heard, individuals should seek shelter immediately.
Once inside, avoid using corded phones, electrical devices, and plumbing—lightning can travel along conductive pathways. It’s also advised to wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder clap before resuming outdoor activities to reduce the risk of lightning accidents.
