Afternoon Storms Cause Widespread Damage in Central Alabama
Birmingham, AL – Severe afternoon thunderstorms and strong winds have wreaked havoc across Central Alabama, leading to numerous power outages and downed trees on Saturday. The City of Birmingham reported that crews from the Department of Public Works responded to approximately 30 locations where trees had fallen, obstructing streets and rights of way.
Residents witnessed city crews actively removing debris, while many took matters into their own hands, clearing fallen branches and trunks from their properties. The storm’s impact extended beyond Birmingham, with social media buzzing with reports of downed trees and significant power outages in regions such as Tuscaloosa, Townley, and Empire.
As of 4:21 p.m., the Oneonta Police Department announced that U.S. 231 would be closed for at least six hours due to downed power lines and obstructing trees. Alabama Power reported a staggering 2,596 active power outages affecting around 75,588 customers in Central Alabama, with nearly 26,000 outages concentrated in Jefferson County.
In response to the situation, Alabama Power has deployed additional support personnel, totaling 400, to assess damage and restore electricity to affected areas as quickly as possible. Residents across the region are advised to remain vigilant and report any hazardous conditions or continued power interruptions.
The recent weather patterns, including storms that have been frequent in the past weeks, have raised concerns about continued severe weather as the season progresses. City officials are urging the public to stay updated through official channels for further developments and safety measures.
For ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to follow Birmingham’s official social media accounts or visit the city’s website.
