Teen from Mountain Brook, Alabama, Reunites with Air Medical Crew After Shark Attack Rescue

Press Article: Teen Shark Attack Survivor Reunites with Life-Saving Medical Crew

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL – Fifteen-year-old Lulu Gribbin, a shark attack survivor, reunited with the Okaloosa MedFlight emergency air medical crew on November 21, expressing her gratitude for their role in saving her life. Gribbin was attacked by a shark while swimming at Seacrest Beach on June 7, 2024, resulting in the loss of her right leg and left hand. She was transported by Okaloosa MedFlight to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where she has since undergone nearly a dozen surgeries and extensive physical therapy.

The reunion, held at the MedFlight base, allowed Gribbin to thank the dedicated team, including Flight Nurse Brittney Pullen, Flight Paramedic Nikki Vaughn, and Pilot Aaron Brown. The crew has followed her miraculous recovery journey and celebrated her determined spirit. “It’s meaningful to hear about her progress and to meet her in person,” said Pullen.

During the visit, Gribbin and her father enjoyed a helicopter flight over Niceville, where she even spotted a dolphin from the sky. This experience marked a significant shift for Gribbin, allowing her to witness the helicopter’s critical medical capabilities from the perspective of a guest rather than a patient.

With aspirations to become an anesthesiologist, Gribbin expressed profound appreciation for the medical staff. “I am forever grateful for the crew who flew me from the beach to the hospital,” she remarked.

Okaloosa MedFlight, part of Air Methods, is noted for its pioneering air medical services, equipped to provide emergency care in-flight. The team reflected on the emotional significance of the reunion, underscoring their mission to save lives. Air Methods Clinical Director Lori O’Neal stated, “The day was amazing. I will never forget Lulu’s smiles.”
