Suspect charged in deadly Birmingham home invasion injured in exchange of gunfire

21-year-old Tyler Reed Sanders has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with a deadly home invasion in Birmingham. The incident occurred at the University Crossings apartments, where Sanders kicked open an apartment door where a group of people were playing cards, resulting in one person dead and three others wounded, including Sanders himself.

The police were initially called to the scene for a burglary in progress but were then informed that shots had been fired. When they arrived, they found Sanders shot outside the apartment building with life-threatening injuries. Another victim, Lafontae Dejarris Lenard, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

It was determined that the suspect had kicked in the front door of the apartment and fired shots, leading someone inside to return fire and strike Sanders. The bullets also damaged neighboring apartments.

University Crossings apartments, previously known as Montevallo Gardens, has been the site of multiple homicide investigations over the years. Sanders, once released from the hospital, will be held without bond pending further legal proceedings.

The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of violence in the community and the need for increased efforts to address and prevent such crimes in the future.
