Construction on the new Alabama State House in Montgomery is progressing smoothly, with the project on track for its scheduled opening in late 2026. As of Thursday, roughly 90% of construction contracts have been awarded, with costs coming in under budget. The seven-story, 460,000-square-foot building is expected to be completed in August 2026 and ready for lawmakers to occupy in November of the same year. The total cost for construction is estimated to be $292 million.
While lawmakers were pleased with the progress, concerns were raised about the lack of involvement of minority-owned companies in the project. Senator Rodger Smitherman questioned the lack of African American contractors and urged the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) to consider involving more Black-owned businesses in the remaining 10% of construction contracts.
Despite the absence of specific requirements mandating minority participation in the project, RSA stated that they aim to get the best product at the best price, regardless of the contractor’s background. The building’s construction is progressing well, with the concrete frame expected to be complete in March, the steel dome in place by April, and the exterior finished by October. The new State House will feature high-speed elevators and accommodate over 300 construction workers on-site daily.
Overall, the project is under budget and on schedule, with RSA emphasizing that the focus is on delivering a high-quality building that will provide a secure and functional space for legislators and the public.
