Standing Up for Migrants: How Faith Leaders Are Taking Risks at the U.S.-Mexico Border Inspired by the Pope

Press Release: Catholic Leaders Raise Alarms Over Escalating Immigration Policies in El Paso

El Paso, Texas — Seven months into President Donald Trump’s second term, significant shifts in federal immigration policy have sparked increased deportations and cut crucial funding for nonprofits aiding immigrants. Leaders in El Paso warn these policies instill fear and hinder humanitarian efforts. “People are afraid to go out for groceries or attend church,” said Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso, calling the situation “terror” rather than mere fear.

Nationwide, mass protests have erupted in response to aggressive ICE raids in public places, including churches. Bishop Seitz underscores the Diocese’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations amid what he and many critics deem mass deportations rooted in racial profiling. A reversal of longstanding “sensitive locations” policy—which once protected areas like schools and places of worship from immigration enforcement—has heightened tensions. This rollback sparked lawsuits from faith groups claiming violations of religious freedom.

Amid these challenges, Bishop Seitz led a candlelight vigil in El Paso, signifying a “moment of hopeful resistance” against oppressive policies. Dylan Corbett of the Hope Border Institute noted the need for placing affected individuals’ testimonies at the forefront of responses to these policies. However, nonprofits delivering aid face potential risks under strict law enforcement initiatives, as seen when Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sought to shut down Annunciation House, a shelter for migrants.

In addition, organizations providing legal assistance like Estrella del Paso face crises, suffering a loss of $5 million in federal funding. As the demand for their services surges, many have been forced to furlough staff. Bishop Seitz called on his community to uphold hope and justice amidst these challenging times, emphasizing that faith, not politics, drives their mission.
