Sports Illustrated Resort Facing Vote Amid Concerns Over Models in ‘String Bikinis’

Tuscaloosa to Vote on Sports Illustrated Resort Amid Controversy

Tuscaloosa, AL – The Tuscaloosa City Council is set to vote on a proposed Sports Illustrated resort project this month, sparking debate among residents. A designated hearing for the $150 million resort on the Black Warrior River will occur on June 24, following a 5-2 council vote on June 3 directing the city attorney to draft an ordinance for its approval.

While developers envision the resort as part of a network of family-oriented sports-themed complexes near universities, some residents voice concerns about its impact on the city. “This resort takes up prime real estate and doesn’t offer anything for Tuscaloosans,” said local resident Sally Reel at the June 3 council meeting. Critics express discomfort regarding the association with Sports Illustrated, a brand historically linked to the objectification of women through its iconic swimsuit editions.

Council member John Faile highlighted community apprehensions about increased traffic and the potential for bikini-clad supermodels in public spaces. He mentioned these concerns were frequently raised during the five public hearings conducted thus far.

Developers, including Jeff Richards of SI Hospitality, have attempted to address worries by clarifying that there are no plans for a casino or bikini models, emphasizing the resort’s family-friendly focus. In response to initial backlash about a nine-story building, plans were updated to feature structures no taller than six stories, along with around 12,000 square feet devoted to dining and retail.

Importantly, the developers have indicated they will not seek tax abatements or other incentives from the city, aiming for a straightforward investment in the community. As the council prepares for the vote, the outcome remains to be seen amid the ongoing discussions.
