Small Salmonella Outbreak Confirmed in Alabama: FDA Links It to Cucumbers

FDA Advises Consumers to Avoid Cucumbers Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In response to a multi-state salmonella outbreak, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to refrain from eating cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc., a Florida-based company. The cucumbers, sold between April 29 and May 19, were distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., of Delray Beach, Florida. Following an outbreak that has resulted in over 26 confirmed illnesses and nine hospitalizations across 15 states, Bedner Growers has issued a recall of the affected produce.

Several retailers, including Kroger, PennRose Farms, Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods, and Harris Teeter, are also conducting recalls on their products that contained the contaminated cucumbers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported isolated cases of illness in states, including one or two in Alabama.

Salmonella infections typically manifest within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, presenting symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms can last up to a week, and the FDA warns that young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to severe infections.

As the FDA investigates the outbreak, consumers are advised to remain vigilant and check their kitchens for any cucumbers sourced from Bedner Growers. The agency continues to coordinate with state officials and health departments to mitigate the spread of the illness and ensure food safety.

For anyone experiencing symptoms associated with the outbreak, the FDA encourages seeking medical attention promptly. Stay updated on any further developments surrounding this investigation as efforts continue to prevent additional cases and protect public health.
