Shark attack survivor recognized on Alabama House floor as Lulu’s Law is passed in her honor

Alabama teen Lulu Gribbin, who survived a shark attack last year resulting in the loss of her hand and leg, was honored on the House floor in Montgomery after the passage of Lulu’s Law, a bill that would establish a shark alert system for beachgoers. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Faulkner, is now moving to the Senate for consideration.

Under Lulu’s Law, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources would operate a shark alert system to notify beachgoers of confirmed attacks or credible threats. U.S. Sen Katie Britt is also working on a federal version of the bill, praising Lulu for her courage and strength in the face of adversity.

The passing of Lulu’s Law in Alabama has sparked interest in other states, with Florida considering similar legislation. House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter commended Lulu for her inspiration and bravery, calling her an extraordinary Alabamian. U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer is carrying a companion bill in Congress.

Governor Kay Ivey expressed support for Lulu’s Law, urging the Legislature to quickly send the bill to her desk for signing. The legislation aims to protect beachgoers and prevent future shark attacks, with bipartisan support and gratitude for Lulu’s advocacy.
