U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, a Democrat from Birmingham, is taking a strong stance against the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency and Elon Musk’s cuts, while Alabama Republicans are mostly supporting the effort. Sewell held an emergency telephone town hall for her constituents to address concerns about federal program cuts and worker attacks.
She has criticized Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for accessing sensitive data through the Treasury Department’s payment systems. A federal judge has temporarily blocked DOGE from accessing these systems. Sewell has led a letter to the IRS acting commissioner, asking for transparency on the access DOGE has.
On the other hand, Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has shown full support for DOGE and Musk, citing their efficiency in cutting wasteful government spending. Other Republicans, like Rep. Barry Moore and Sen. Katie Britt, have also praised DOGE for its efforts to end wasteful government programs.
Assistant House Democratic Leader Joe Neguse joined Sewell’s town hall to discuss methods for Democrats to push back against the administration’s actions on federal spending. Sewell, who is the first Black woman in a leadership role on the Ways and Means Committee, emphasized the importance of funding the IRS during a recent hearing.
The House Subcommittee on Delivering Government Efficiency, chaired by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, held its first hearing on the “war on waste.” Despite the divide between Democrats and Republicans on the issue, both sides are actively engaged in the debate on government efficiency and spending cuts.
