Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Hale and Perry Counties
Hale and Perry counties are under a severe thunderstorm alert, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) early Thursday at 3:04 a.m., with expectations of wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph until 3:30 a.m. Radar indicated a strong storm located near Sawyerville, advancing east at 45 mph. Areas such as Greensboro, Sawyerville, and Greensboro Municipal Airport are among those potentially affected.
The NWS cautioned residents to seek shelter indoors, as gusty winds could uproot tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Lightning is a significant threat during thunderstorms, with over 25 million strikes reported annually in the U.S., predominantly during the summer months. Lightning claims approximately 20 lives each year, with the risk peaking when storms are nearby.
Experts recommend a lightning safety plan: monitor weather conditions, seek immediate shelter if thunder is heard, and refrain from using corded phones and electrical devices indoors. After a storm, it’s vital to wait at least 30 minutes post-lightning or thunder before resuming outdoor activities, as lightning can strike even after a storm seems to have passed.
In addition to thunderstorm precautions, heavy rainfall can lead to hazardous flooding conditions. The NWS advises keeping a safe distance from culverts and drainage ditches, reducing speed while driving, and ensuring visibility by using headlights. During heavy rain, the first half-hour poses the highest risk for slippery roads, urging drivers to exercise increased caution.
As weather conditions fluctuate, residents are reminded to stay alert, prepared, and informed to safeguard their lives during severe weather events. For more updates, rely on local authorities and services like Advance Local Weather Alerts from United Robots.
