State Sen. Jack Williams Announces Candidacy for Agriculture Commissioner
State Senator Jack Williams, a Republican from Wilmer, has officially declared his candidacy for Alabama’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries in the 2026 election. Currently in his second term as a senator, Williams previously served two terms in the Alabama House of Representatives. His formal announcement follows extensive campaigning across the state over the past year.
With term-limited current Commissioner Rick Pate pursuing a run for lieutenant governor, Williams aims to address pressing concerns in Alabama’s agribusiness. “I’m concerned about the state of our agribusiness in Alabama,” Williams stated in a recent press release. He highlighted the aging demographic of farmers, with the average age being 60 years old, prompting worries about the future of crop production and livestock management in the state. Williams advocates for the independence of Alabama’s food supply, criticizing reliance on international sources.
Additionally, Williams underscored the detrimental impact of imported agricultural products on local farmers, supporting President Trump’s tariff strategies. “Imported beef and crops from countries with unfair labor practices are jeopardizing American farmers,” said Williams, emphasizing the adverse effects on various sectors, including seafood and catfish farming in Alabama. He argues that while foreign goods may offer short-term savings, they jeopardize quality and national food security.
Williams, a fourth-generation farmer from Mobile County, faces competition in the GOP primary from Douglas Mayor and farmer Corey Hill, as well as Baldwin County business owner Christina Woerner McInnis. The Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026. Williams’s commitment aims to fortify Alabama’s agricultural future while ensuring the protection of local farming interests.
