Alabama Gears Up for 250th Birthday Celebration of the United States
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, Alabama is ramping up plans for a year-long celebration set to launch in April 2025 and culminate on July 4, 2026. The Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission, led by Executive Officer Natalie Steed, aims to involve the entire state in the festivities, ensuring that communities and schools have opportunities to participate.
The highlight of the celebrations will take place at the American Village in Montevallo, hailed for its exemplary Independence Day events. However, organizers seek to extend the celebration to local communities, offering resources and guidance to create a unified celebration across Alabama. In the upcoming legislative session, Senator Arthur Orr has requested approximately $3.4 million in funding for the commission, which includes dedicated allocations for school initiatives and community grants.
"We have been working with Governor Kay Ivey to secure funding that supports smaller towns and counties in their celebratory efforts," Orr stated. The commission will launch an interactive website, america250al.org, which will feature events, educational resources, and a platform for communities to share their local plans.
The kickoff event in April 2025 will commemorate Paul Revere’s legendary ride and feature reenactments of key Revolutionary Battles. Schools are encouraged to get involved through a special semiquincentennial initiative, which will provide lesson plans and activities for students at all educational levels.
Moreover, Green Valley Farms will provide "Liberty Trees" to each county, symbolizing community and remembrance. With additional funds for American Village’s Independence Hall, housing significant George Washington artifacts, Alabama is positioning itself at the forefront of national celebrations while honoring its historical roots.
