Podcast: Huntsville Expected to Be Assigned Space Command Headquarters by Rogers This Month

Huntsville Expected to Be Named Home of Space Command Headquarters in April

U.S. Rep Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has announced his expectation that Huntsville will be named the home of Space Command headquarters in April. During an appearance on the McCrary Institute podcast, Rogers expressed confidence that Alabama’s fight to bring SPACECOM to Redstone Arsenal will come to an end this month.

Rogers revealed that the decision to move the headquarters from Colorado to Huntsville will be announced shortly after the confirmation of Troy Meink, Trump’s pick to lead the Air Force. Meink’s nomination advanced out of the Senate Armed Services Committee and is now headed to the full Senate for a vote.

Rep. Dale Strong also expressed confidence in Huntsville’s chances, stating that the city is well-positioned to host the headquarters. Additionally, Rogers discussed President Trump’s plans to build a missile defense shield called the “Golden Dome” and highlighted the role he expects north Alabama to play in its creation.

Rogers emphasized the importance of focusing on space and cyber to counter threats, and revealed that the House Armed Services Committee is in the early stages of crafting the next National Defense Authorization Act. He stated that his top priority for the NDAA is to raise defense spending as a percentage of the U.S. GDP, which currently sits at 2.9%.

Rogers believes that defense spending should be closer to 5% of GDP to ensure that the military is prepared and able to deter aggression effectively. He highlighted the need for a robust national security posture and stressed the importance of allocating resources to protect the country’s interests in space and cyber.
