Packers Waive Record-Setting RB Jalen White, Sign WR Kawaan Baker
In a significant roster move, the Green Bay Packers waived running back Jalen White, a notable Alabama high school record-holder, and added wide receiver Kawaan Baker on Tuesday. White, who made headlines in 2019 by setting the Alabama high school single-season rushing record with 3,517 yards at Daleville, joined the Packers as an undrafted rookie this May after a five-year stint at Georgia Southern.
During the preseason opener against the New York Jets, White managed to rush for 16 yards on two attempts but was sidelined due to a foot injury, preventing him from practicing on Monday. Consequently, he was waived with an injury designation. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, White will revert to the Packers’ injured reserve on Wednesday.
Conversely, the Packers took the opportunity to claim Baker off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. Baker, formerly of South Alabama, had been waived following a preseason appearance where he played five offensive snaps against the Seattle Seahawks. The decision to bring him back comes as Green Bay navigates injuries among their wide receiver corps.
Baker’s resume includes a solid college career with 126 receptions for 1,829 yards and 16 touchdowns. Despite being drafted in the seventh round by the New Orleans Saints in 2021, he has predominantly spent time on practice squads, including stints with the Packers last year and a suspension related to performance-enhancing substances.
The Packers are gearing up for their next preseason matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, set for noon CDT on Saturday, with ongoing adjustments to their roster amid injury challenges.
