Opinion Piece: Alabama’s Education Funding Formula Needs to Be Revised to Support Every Child


VOICES for Alabama’s Children is urging educators and schools to adopt a holistic approach when addressing the needs of students. They emphasize that students’ well-being must be considered before they can effectively learn and thrive in the classroom. However, the organization points out that the current education funding system in Alabama is outdated and fails to take into account the unique needs of each student.
The 2023 Alabama Kids Count Data Book reveals low academic achievement among students, with only half of fourth graders and 21% of eighth graders proficient in math during the 2022-2023 school year. Students from rural areas, those with disabilities, and those from low-income communities are disproportionately affected by the achievement gap due to attending schools with less funding and resources.
Despite the benefits of investing in education, Alabama ranks 39th in the nation in the amount spent per pupil, significantly below the national average. VOICES is part of a coalition advocating for a modernized education funding formula that would provide all school districts with proportionate funding and flexibility to address students’ individual needs.
Rhonda Mann, executive director of VOICES for Alabama’s Children, emphasizes the importance of ensuring that every child in Alabama has the resources they need to reach their full potential. Through research, public awareness, and advocacy, the organization is working towards building a better society and a stronger economy by investing in quality education for all students.
