Tragic Car Crash Claims Life of Summerville Man in Cherokee County
In a devastating incident on Wednesday evening, a vehicle collision in Cherokee County, Alabama, led to the death of 58-year-old Gerone L. Evans from Summerville, Georgia. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reports that the crash took place on Alabama 35, near the 7-mile marker, roughly three miles north of Gaylesville.
Evans was driving a 1994 Nissan pickup when his vehicle was struck by a 2023 Nissan Altima operated by 55-year-old Debra J. Mitchell from Hermitage, Tennessee. Following the initial impact, Evans’s pickup veered off the road and overturned. Tragically, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which resulted in him being ejected from the vehicle. Evans was immediately transported to a Georgia hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Mitchell, along with several passengers in her Nissan Altima—including two other women from Tennessee and two children—sustained injuries as well. They were all taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment following the collision.
The crash underscores the critical importance of seat belt usage as a safety measure. Investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing. The community mourns the loss of Evans, and the local authorities continue to offer support to the affected families during this tragic time. Further updates regarding the incident are anticipated as investigations proceed.
