A bank robbery suspect was killed in a shootout with law enforcement in Florence, Alabama, on Tuesday. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident, which also left a police officer and a bystander injured. Louis Michael Hill, 26, was identified as the suspect killed in the exchange of gunfire.
Deputies and police officers were responding to a call about a bank robbery when the suspect’s vehicle became disabled. The suspect, Hill, then attempted to steal another vehicle and fired at law enforcement officers, prompting them to return fire and fatally wound him. A bystander, identified as Grace McClusky, a firefighter with Center Star Fire/Rescue, was injured while attempting to render aid at the scene.
According to a witness, the suspect began shooting after crashing his car and then attempted to open the door of another vehicle before turning his attention to the police officers. The injuries sustained by both the bystander and the police officer were not life-threatening.
The small fire department where McClusky works praised her quick action in responding to the scene of the car crash and providing aid to those in need, despite being unaware of the ongoing police pursuit. The firefighter is currently recovering at home. The State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the incident.
