Jacksonville State’s football team came out hungry and dominated Southern Miss in a 44-7 victory on Saturday. It was the Gamecocks’ first win of the season and head coach Rich Rodriguez was pleased with the team’s performance.
The team put up impressive offensive numbers, with Tyler Huff leading the way with 236 passing yards and 77 rushing yards. Tre Stewart contributed 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Anwar Lewis added 65 yards and two touchdowns. The defense also shined, forcing four turnovers including four interceptions from different players.
The team’s performance on third down, both offensively and defensively, showed improvement from previous games. After a slow start to the season, the Gamecocks are looking to build on this success as they head into Conference USA play.
Coach Rodriguez praised the team’s effort and emphasized the importance of getting movement up front to improve short-yardage situations. The players echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the focus on details and teamwork leading up to the game.
The Gamecocks will have a bye week before opening Conference USA play against Kennesaw State on October 4. The team is looking to continue their momentum and turn their season around after a slow start.
