Governor Ivey Appoints Cynthia Lee Almond as President of the Alabama Public Service Commission

MONTGOMERY – In a significant leadership change, Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Rep. Cynthia Lee Almond, R-Tuscaloosa, as the new president of the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC), succeeding Twinkle Cavanaugh, who has joined the Trump Administration as the state director for rural development with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Governor Ivey praised Almond’s track record, stating, "Cynthia has proven to be an extremely effective public servant and leader. I am confident the people of Alabama will be even better served when she takes the helm at the Public Service Commission."

Expressing her gratitude for the appointment, Almond, who has served House District 63 since 2021, remarked, "I am honored to have been asked by Gov. Ivey to fill this important position… I believe my training as an attorney and legislator will prove to be helpful in performing this role."

As president, Almond will manage the three-member commission responsible for regulating Alabama’s utilities. With a strong legal background that includes experience in estate planning, business law, and real estate, Almond also owns a title company.

During her time in the Legislature, Almond has contributed to various crucial committees, such as Ways and Means Education and Judiciary. She has successfully collaborated with Governor Ivey on legislative initiatives, including the Safe Alabama public safety package and the establishment of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences.

A graduate of the University of Alabama and its School of Law, Almond is also a past member of the Tuscaloosa City Council. She will officially assume her new role on June 16, following her resignation from the Legislature on June 15, with Governor Ivey set to administer the oath of office.
