International Students Contribute $348 Million to Alabama’s Economy, Report Reveals

Press Release: Alabama’s International Students Contribute Millions Amid Federal Policy Uncertainty

Montgomery, AL – October 2023

Alabama’s international student population is a significant economic driver, contributing an estimated $348.6 million and creating 2,373 jobs in the 2023-24 academic year, according to a report by NAFSA: Association of International Educators. However, recent federal policy changes, including President Trump’s travel restrictions on foreign nationals from 19 countries, pose a potential risk to this revenue stream and the overall economy of college towns across the state.

The report indicates that approximately 10,000 international students are enrolled in Alabama, with the bulk—around 8,400—attending public colleges and universities. As federal regulations tighten, advocates worry that the influx of international students could dwindle, impacting university funding and research efforts. "If you cut off that international pipeline, you cut off a good chunk of economic flow," said Rachel Banks, NAFSA’s Senior Director for Public Policy.

In a nationwide context, international students contributed $43.8 billion and supported over 378,000 jobs within the U.S. economy during the same academic year. In Alabama, institutions like Auburn University at Montgomery have seen international enrollment surge by over 200% since 2019, highlighting the growing importance of this demographic.

With growing uncertainties surrounding visa processes, federal funding cuts, and declining international interest post-pandemic, higher education institutions could face severe repercussions. Universities such as the University of Alabama, Auburn University, and others have expressed commitment to supporting their international student populations while closely monitoring federal changes.
