The Alabama Department of Health (ADPH) is urging parents and guardians to ensure that their children are up-to-date on required vaccinations before the upcoming school year. In accordance with state law, children must present an up-to-date Certificate of Immunization (COI) when entering childcare centers and schools. Vaccines are essential in protecting against 16 serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, according to the department.
Dr. Wes Stubblefield, chief medical officer at the ADPH, emphasized the importance of vaccines in preventing diseases such as Haemophilus Influenzae type B, which can lead to severe respiratory illnesses and meningitis in young children. The ADPH’s Back to School Immunization Checklist outlines eight recommended vaccines for children of various ages.
For families facing financial constraints, the Alabama Vaccines for Children Program offers free immunizations to eligible children from birth to 18 years old. Eligibility criteria include being Medicaid-enrolled, uninsured, American Indian or Alaskan Native, or under-insured. Families can contact the ADPH Immunization Division for assistance in finding healthcare providers participating in the program.
The ADPH emphasizes the importance of vaccines in preventing the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases and saving lives. More information on immunization for children and adults can be found on the ADPH website. Parents are encouraged to schedule vaccinations for their children ahead of the school year to ensure their health and safety.
