Harris and Trump in Close Presidential Race: Recent Poll Reveals 7 Point Shift

A recent poll conducted by the University of Massachusetts Amherst shows a significant shift in the 2024 race for the White House. The poll, conducted from July 29 to August 1, revealed that 43% of respondents would support presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, while 40% were backing former President Donald Trump. This marks a 7-point swing in favor of Harris compared to a January poll, where Trump led then-challenger President Joe Biden.

The poll results have been described as shaking up the presidential race by political science professor Jesse Rhodes, who noted that Harris now holds a narrow lead over Trump. The shift is attributed to significant changes in support among young voters, African Americans, Latinx Americans, and moderates, all of whom have moved towards Harris.

Among Trump supporters, reasons for backing him included his first-term accomplishments and belief that he will save America. On the other hand, Harris supporters cited her representation of a new generation, ability to strengthen America’s global standing, and status as the Democratic nominee for the White House as reasons for their support.

In terms of how the candidates would handle different issues, Trump received high scores for the economy, taxes, crime, immigration, and international conflicts, while Harris scored well on reproductive rights, climate change, healthcare, and education.

The nationwide poll included a sample of 1,000 respondents and has a margin of error of 3.8%. The results indicate a close and dynamically changing race for the White House in 2024.
