Greg McElroy Discusses the ‘Silver Lining’ of Alabama Not Making the CFP

Alabama’s CFP Miss Offers Valuable Learning Lessons, Says Greg McElroy

In a recent segment on WJOX-FM 94.5, former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy shared his perspective on the Crimson Tide’s exclusion from the College Football Playoff (CFP). As Alabama fans grapple with the disappointment of missing out, McElroy emphasized that this setback could ultimately benefit the team in the long run.

McElroy underscored the demanding nature of college football, noting, "You have to play at a high level every week, and if you don’t, you’re in big trouble." He suggested that the absence from the playoff will serve as a crucial wake-up call for the players. “This is from a Bama fan perspective; I am happy this happened. Had they gotten in, it would have reinforced a dangerous complacency," he explained.

With SMU capturing the final playoff spot, Alabama found themselves sidelined despite a more challenging SEC schedule. McElroy contended that the selection committee’s choice could provide a valuable lesson for the team: "When you touch the stove and it’s hot and you get burned, you’re not going to touch it the next time.”

While acknowledging the immediate disappointment for players and fans, he expressed optimism about the potential positive outcomes. “I think good will come of this. … I think this is a good learning experience for young players on the team and for the guys coming back next year.”

As Alabama reflects on the lessons from this season, fans and analysts alike hope this experience will foster a renewed commitment to excellence in future competitions.
