Darius Slayton Nominated for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award by New York Giants
Former Auburn wide receiver Darius Slayton has been nominated for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award by the New York Giants. The NFL announced the nominees from all 32 teams on Thursday. This annual accolade honors an NFL player for their exceptional community service and performance on the field.
Slayton expressed his surprise and gratitude upon learning of his nomination. “It’s not something that I saw coming at all. It’s an ultimate honor to inspire others, like I’ve seen other players do,” he said, reflecting on the impact athletes can have on young fans.
In his sixth season with the Giants, Slayton was drafted in the fifth round in 2019 and has led the team in receiving yards for four of the past five seasons. His charitable initiatives began early in his career with the establishment of the Left-Hand Right-Hand Foundation. "I always have my family and close friends helping at my events," he noted, highlighting the communal nature of his charitable work.
Slayton has fostered significant relationships through his contributions, notably with the Far Rockaway, Harlem, and Bronx Giants, a New York Police Department program aimed at supporting boys with academic tools. His dedication was recognized when he received the United Way of New York City’s Hometown Hero Award this spring, helping to raise more than $2.3 million for local families.
The winner of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award will be revealed during the "NFL Honors" program on February 6, with substantial donations made to charities chosen by the nominees. Fans can support their favorite players through a voting challenge that will influence additional funding for their charitable efforts.
