Severe Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Washington County
On Monday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Washington County at 7:31 p.m., valid until 8:15 p.m. Residents in Chatom, Tibbie, and Fruitdale are urged to prepare for pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) and wind gusts reaching 40 mph. At the time of the alert, Doppler radar detected a strong storm located six miles northwest of McIntosh, moving northwest at a speed of 20 mph. Gusty winds have the potential to uproot tree limbs and toss unsecured items, leading to minor damage outdoors.
The NWS has advised those outdoors to seek shelter immediately to avoid dangers posed by lightning and high winds.
Lightning remains a significant hazard during thunderstorms, with around 25 million strikes occurring annually in the U.S. Lightning claims the lives of about 20 individuals each year, underscoring the importance of safety precautions during storms. To minimize risks, the NWS recommends monitoring weather conditions closely, finding indoor shelter, and avoiding use of corded phones and electrical devices when indoors.
For those caught outside without shelter, it’s advised to steer clear of open fields, isolated trees, and metal structures, as these can attract lightning. Seeking refuge in low-lying areas can be safer if camping or noticing a thunderstorm.
Additionally, heavy rain can create hazardous road conditions. Drivers are reminded to maintain safe distances, reduce speed, and enhance visibility by using headlights. The NWS stresses the importance of staying informed about weather updates to ensure safety during severe weather events.
Stay alert, and prioritize safety as storm conditions develop in the region.
