Final Report on Generative AI Implementation in Alabama State Government Released

Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama has announced the release of the final report from the state’s Task Force on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). The task force, established in February 2024, was tasked with exploring the current use of GenAI in government agencies, promoting best practices, and developing a framework for future implementation.

Chaired by Secretary of Information Technology Daniel Urquhart, the task force consisted of representatives from various state entities and higher education institutions. Through four specialized working groups, the task force delved into key areas such as policies and governance, data management, ethical use, and workforce education.

The report, presented to the Governor’s Office in late November, addresses important topics including the distinction between GenAI and traditional AI, risks associated with GenAI, data ownership guidelines, employee training recommendations, procurement standards, and an inventory of GenAI usage in state agencies.

Secretary Urquhart commended the collaborative effort that went into the report, emphasizing its aim to educate and provide strategic recommendations for the ethical implementation of GenAI in Alabama. The report is now available for public review, showcasing the state’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technologies in a responsible manner.

Governor Ivey expressed confidence in Alabama’s position as an industry leader in the ethical use of artificial intelligence, highlighting the state’s growth and innovation in various sectors. The release of the GenAI Task Force Final Report marks a significant milestone in Alabama’s journey towards leveraging emerging technologies for the benefit of its citizens.
