Family Influence Leads Coach to Accept Chelsea Basketball Position

Johnson Takes Chelsea Coaching Position After Heartfelt Decision

In a surprising shift within Alabama’s Class 6A basketball landscape, former Ramsay boys basketball coach Denton Johnson has been appointed as the new head coach for the Chelsea girls’ team, a decision spurred by family considerations rather than any dissatisfaction with the Decatur program. Initially set to lead Decatur’s girls next season, Johnson announced his change of plans following a meeting with the Shelby County Board of Education.

“My heart sank when I had to inform the principal at Decatur,” Johnson reflected, appreciating the professionalism of the Decatur program and its supportive environment. Johnson’s connection to Decatur was nascent, having met the players just once, but he expressed deep remorse for the young athletes impacted by his sudden decision.

With a distinguished coaching record of 290-90 over nine seasons at Ramsay, Johnson emphasized that the logistics of his family’s home situation played a crucial role in his choice. His house had been on the market for nearly a month, attracting only one unsatisfactory offer. Residing in Scottsboro, he found Chelsea’s proximity more feasible; his wife teaches at nearby Oak Mountain. "You can’t pay two mortgages," Johnson noted candidly.

Chelsea, looking to rebuild after the departure of 2024-25 Class 6A Coach of the Year Jason Harlow, who led the team to a state championship, presents itself as an attractive opportunity for Johnson. Despite his respect for Decatur’s burgeoning talent, he expressed optimism about Chelsea’s potential. "Chelsea is a good, healthy spot to be successful," he stated confidently, setting the stage for what may be an exciting new chapter in the Chelsea girls’ basketball program.
