BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Cybersecurity Event Discovered in State Systems
State officials in Alabama are investigating a significant cybersecurity incident affecting certain state systems, as reported by Governor Kay Ivey’s office. The issue was identified on Friday evening, with the discovery of compromised usernames and passwords of some state employees. In response, authorities have cautioned all state employees to be vigilant against potential malicious emails.
While the exact scope of the affected systems remains unclear, a spokesperson for the Governor’s office provided limited updates when inquired by the media. Cybersecurity expert Joe Brunsman from Ciardi Ciardi & Astin suggests that this breach is likely a result of a phishing attempt. He noted that such incidents often occur when individuals mistakenly click on unsafe emails, leading to compromised security.
State officials are actively working with a cybersecurity firm to assess the situation, focusing on identifying the pathway of the intrusion and whether any specific vulnerabilities in the systems were exploited. Currently, the state does not believe that personal identifiable information has been impacted. However, Brunsman highlights the importance of remaining vigilant, emphasizing that while officials currently have no reason to believe information was stolen, the possibility has not been entirely ruled out.
Brunsman recommends that Alabamians employ unique passwords for state and personal accounts, utilize two-factor authentication, and consider password managers to enhance their cybersecurity measures.
The state continues to urge caution while investigations proceed, with further updates expected as information becomes available. For ongoing news updates, residents can access news alerts through mobile apps or subscribe to their email newsletter.
