Ex-Auburn Lineman and UFL Champion Joins Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions Sign Gunner Britton After UFL Championship Season

Former Auburn offensive lineman Gunner Britton is set to make another run in the NFL after being signed by the Detroit Lions. The move comes as the Lions placed offensive linemen Justin Herron and Colby Sorsdal on season-ending injured reserve. Britton, who spent four years at Western Kentucky before playing for Auburn in 2023, was initially signed as an undrafted rookie by the Buffalo Bills but was waived after preseason roster cuts on August 27, 2024.

Britton found success in the United Football League (UFL), where he played for the DC Defenders during the 2025 season. Notably, he lined up at right tackle during the Defenders’ impressive 58-34 victory over the Michigan Panthers in the UFL Championship Game on June 14. In a standout moment during the regular season, he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, showcasing his versatility while playing as a tight end.

In contrast, the news was less favorable for Britton’s former teammate at Auburn, wide receiver Seth Williams. The Las Vegas Raiders waived Williams with an injury designation after he missed the team’s preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. If unclaimed, he will revert to injured reserve with Las Vegas. Williams had previously enjoyed success at Auburn, where he registered 132 receptions for 2,124 yards and 17 touchdowns before being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.
