Alabama State Representative Tracy Estes, a Republican from Winfield, was arrested on a domestic violence charge after his wife accused him of threatening to beat her. According to court records, the lawmaker’s wife, Christina Estes, stated that he had a history of abusive behavior towards her. Tracy Estes was jailed on a misdemeanor charge of third-degree domestic violence, but jail records did not show him in custody the following day.
Christina Estes obtained a protective order prohibiting her husband from coming within 300 feet of her or their home and ordered him to surrender any firearms he owns. Tracy Estes, who was elected to the Alabama House in 2018, has not responded to requests for comment and it is unclear if he has retained an attorney.
House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter expressed awareness of the situation, stating that he expects elected officials to be beyond reproach in both their professional and personal lives. The 57-year-old lawmaker represents the 17th District, which includes Lamar, Marion, and Winston counties in northwest Alabama.
The arrest of Representative Estes has raised concerns about the behavior of elected officials and the need for accountability in both their public and private lives. The case will be determined by the justice system, as Alabamians deserve the very best from their elected representatives.
